[Recommended]: Yolo Akili, Wellness Educator, Poet, Activist, Astrologer »

I first heard about Yolo from a recommendation by Mia Mingus on Twitter (some of you may remember her as being the writer of the utterly powerful Moving Towards The Ugly) recommending him as a QPOC astrologer worth his salt. I have a long-standing interest in astrology, but with a mixed relationship to it: I relate more to Western astrology, but some of the prominent people working with it veer towards some weird ideas about other cultures - yet Vedic or Chinese astrology doesn’t connect with me at all despite it being culturally closer.
I was even more intrigued to find out that he was active with a lot of different things, being passionate about social justice, politics, and expression through a spiritual lens. I quite appreciated his post on how privileging intellect over feelings is at the heart of his oppression, and I notice that he’s been keeping up with the Occupy movements - how many astrologers get that involved?
Yolo’s astrology consultations are amazingly affordable, and right now there’s a sale even, so I figured it’s a great opportunity to get some perspective on my chart - especially since I was going through a very difficult time and needed some guidance & support. While there was a bit of a mixup with the timing - which often happens - we got ourselves sorted for a good 30 mins of star talk.
What stands out for me about Yolo is his sense of humour. This is the same guy who tweeted (about Saturn leaving his chart): “thank you jesus, buddha, allah, and mariah carey.”. He was open, cheerful, and casual - it was like hanging out with a friend who just happened to know what was going on starwise with you.
I was a bit surprised and confused by him claiming that I was a Scorpio, and then a Libra/Scorpio cusp - I’m born on Sept 26, which makes me a Libra, and closer to the Virgo end of the chart. What he described about Scorpio made sense - apparently I had a lot of Scorpio energy around the place - but it did make me wonder what he’s using for calculations and if he thought my birthdate was in October. (Oh noez, it changes everything!).
Yolo looks at the positive in your chart and gives you something to look forward to. He connects well with social justice types and gave me some ideas for how I could use my strengths to create better change for the world. He was so entertaining and fun that I kept wanting to ask him all sorts of random questions, just to see what he’d come up with.
Yolo was very generous with my questions and with his analysis; I just wish I had notes! But his other passions definitely shine through, and I would totally recommend him if you want an inexpensive look at your chart, especially as a newbie.
