The world of scholarship and academia are outmoded systems that neglect to provide the main component necessary for individual growth, Critical Thinking. Some universities do a cursory course in it that may last a semester or two, however it would be most prudent for critical thinking to be taught from grade one through graduate school. Unfortunately that has little chance of happening because at this time, the purpose of education currently is to indoctrinate the student population into a system of conformity or the “logic” of the present system.

As you view the MTV VMA performances tonight turn off the sound and just watch the dancers! Then imagine what the stage would look like without those amazing dancers! Recognize that none of those dancers’ will be credited at the end. Only those of us who know them will know their names. Now think about how much creative freedom, economic stability and empowerment those dancers would have if they were the featured artist, performing in their own productions, and stopped dancing BEHIND the music artist.

Anyone is entitled to their personal opinion. However when your opinion adversely effects the growth of one group of people, your prejudices become racism. Racism is not about RACE. It is about the subjugation of any particular group or class of people based upon your prejudices against them. People with power in the arts have discriminatory attitudes towards hip-hop dancers that inhibit their professional and socio-economic growth. That, my friends, is racism. It is about the deliberate and systematic subjugation of the people who practice that art. When a prejudice directly impacts the quality of life of a particular group of people it is racism. The abecedarian and puerile understanding of racism being solely centered around race here in America is what makes people think of it that way. However when people’s prejudices against hip-hop dancers influence policy, discourse, rentals, payment, and quality of life, it is blatant discrimination and racism not plain ol’ prejudice.

Advice for young feminists? Do something else besides feminism. I’m serious. The feminist blogosphere is oversaturated in my opinion. Please, find something else you love and take feminist theory there. It gets lonely over here in tech and video games – I have a great crew of other feminists but we are a little island in a vast sea. We need more feminist minded business bloggers, feminist theory wielding finance bloggers. Labor organizers with a feminist lens blogging. Can you imagine what Deadspin (the sports blog) would look like with a feminist on staff? Restructure writes about science, tech and feminism – join her! Publish a blog doing literary criticism with a feminist lens! Take on the NYT! Talk about class issues and feminism. Whatever it is, apply your feminism in a different space.
